Sunday Reading List

Here are some things I’ve read recently that I found noteworthy!

Lil Kim’s Light Tan Shirt Described as “Nude”   — This is an interesting look at how we describe “flesh tone” and “nude” which is especially bizarre when we’re describing the clothes a black person is wearing. Tonight’s the Oscar’s so I’m going to be on the lookout for any dresses described as “nude” and who is actually wearing them.

February is Teen dating Violence Awareness Month – Feministe has a great article with some upsetting statistics (for example -”1 in 3 teens report experiencing some kind of abuse in their romantic relationships, including verbal and emotional abuse.”) There are also some great resource links here.

Sex Ed For Teens: Where’s the Mucus? – This is article is relevant to my undergraduate thesis, which was a study about the lack of information young women are provided about menstruation. Part of what we’re not taught is how ovulation works. Lisa Leger argues, and I agree, that if the ovarian cycle and how estrogen production promotes cervical mucus many young women and their partners could better understand when she is more fertile and possibly avoid more unwanted pregnancies.

The Cult of Masculinity and Sexual Violence in War – Gloria Steinem answers some questions about why rape is so prevalent in war. It starts off “First, it’s important to note that rape and war didn’t always go together.” Do I have to try and sell this any more? Go read it!
